Snowy Days

We had record snow fall in our area last month. Of course we headed out to GR to check it out!

This guy's a little dirty.

Beer Garden

Attempt to play poker. We don't have chips so we improvised with bottle caps.

We discovered that it's really easy to see Lucky in the snow.

Big. Bold. Powerful.

I attended a Get Started meeting with the DFW 3-Day representative this weekend. I learned quite a bit of what to expect this year, being involved with this life-changing event. The main theme I came away with:
Big. Bold. Powerful.

I want to share some of the research that Susan G. Komen fund raising has done. Nationally, Komen has funded research leading to:

• Discovery of the first breast cancer susceptibility gene (BRCA1) and a test for women to learn about their inherited risk. This has led to very early detection of breast cancer in some women and prevention in others.

• First use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to discover some cancers that are not visible on mammograms. And while mammograms remain our most effective screening tool, Komen is investing in newer imaging technologies, such as molecular breast imaging (MBI), which may detect cancers that MRIs and mammograms miss.

• Anti-angiogenesis research that demonstrated that breast cancer tumors need a blood supply to survive. This led to development of drugs that stop tumors from making new blood vessels, and in many cases, from progressing.

• Evidence that most breast tumors are driven by hormones, and that drugs such as Tamoxifen are very effective treatments for women whose tumors are estrogen sensitive.

• Discovery of aromatase inhibitors, a newer class of hormone treatments.

• Discovery of the pathways that some cancer cells take in the body, leading to treatments to potentially stop the spread of cancers to other organs.

Texas Wine Country

Eric & I had such a great time visiting the Texas Wine Country on Valentine's Day! It's still amazes me that I never realized this was just a 2 hour drive from our house!

We started the day out with a healthy (helping) of breakfast at the Koffee Kup in Hico, then headed down 281 to Burnet. We were planning to start south in Burnet and head back north to Lampassas. But we only made it to 3 vineyards, all surrounding Burnet. We had such a great time & look forward to visiting some more of the 27 wineries/vineyards on the map!

Fall Creek - the oldest vineyard in Texas.

Lost Creek - this place has a few rooms to rent, a beautiful outdoor firepit area, and a very nice restaurant/bar for dining.

Lunch on the Road

Perissos - this was our favorite of the three. A couple - the - started this vineyard just a few years ago & has really produced some nice wine. They just opened the vineyard (& their home) for tastings last year. We're looking into their wine club.... hmmm...anniversary gift??
