3-Day Training Begins

After running El Scorcho last weekend, I've now switched gears to my Susan G Komen 3-Day Walk training. I've completed 3 walks and am really surprised at how sore I am! I really thought that since I've been running 4 days a week for 4 months that the transition would be no problem. I don't think I've done any speed walking since High School.

As it turns out, I'm also walking just as many miles as I was running. It's been tough not to pick up my feet & run, but I'm not doing it! I've noticed the burn in the top, front of my legs (outer quads?), lower shins, lower back muscles, and it feels like I need to stand on the balls of my feet to stretch.

The toughest part is that I'm now walking 4 mph. That takes alot of time in the morning, trying to work in 5-6 miles can take up to 1.5 hours. It's going to be hard to work all of these miles in before work. I may have to split into 2-a-day walks when the weather cools off.

El Scorcho Cuatro

El Scorcho Cuatro was a great event! This was my 2nd time to run, the first being 3 years ago during the 1st El Scorcho race. It was really great to see that the event has grown, with both runners & volunteers & spectators. Logan and his amigos have done a great job with this event!

The weather was a little warmer than I had hoped, right around 90 degrees. There was a big rain the night before, leaving a few soft spots along the trail but not a problem. The lights along the trail were adequate, along with the full moon. I only used my flashlight in a few spots.

I was very thankful to have my support crew - Eric! He was a lifesaver, keeping me hydrated, gu'd up, and motivated along the way. This was also my first time to run a race with Nell. It was nice to have a partner to chat with and pass the time.

We kept a good pace through lap 3, mile 9. Lap 4 was a little slower. And lap 5 was just as tough as I remembered. But as opposed to my 1st El Scorcho, this year I ran most of it. I finished with a 2:51 time. In a perfect world, I had hoped to finish in 2:30, but all things considered I'm really happy that I did it. Am able to do it. And finished it!

Thanks to everyone for your support! 4 months of training, 229 miles.

Day 10: Homeward Bound

We headed out of the Grand Canyon, determined to make it back to Texas in 1 day. 14 hours of driving...or so we thought. The drive was rather uneventful. We stopped in Albequerque, where I was supposed to start driving. But that's when the rain started, and it escorted us all the way home. This turned our 14 hour drive into 19 hours. We stopped a few times due to flash flooding, but finally made it home at 4 am, safe & sound.

All in all, we had a fantastic trip in the RV & only broke a few things along the way. Some of which are still being negotiated with the owner....

Day 9: Grand Canyon

We finally made it to the Grand Canyon! I was really impressed with the free shuttle system they had working which enabled us to see everything on the South Rim without having a car.

We decided to go ahead and spend the night here so we could take it all in. The kids participated in the Junior Ranger program, listened to Ranger Tara talk about the benefits of natural forest fires (natural = caused by lightning or volcano). We took a great bike ride & had some dinner at camp. A nice day with very little driving.

Day 8: Sacramento to Seligman AZ

We headed out of Sacramento with intentions of making it to the Grand Canyon. We drove through the farming areas of southern California & it felt like we were really close to Mexico (which we were). It was pretty amazing to me to drive through the CA-AZ desert, which I have never seen. But it makes for a long day of driving.

Just as we approached the AZ border, we had a blowout on our back, right, inner tire. This wasn't too much of a problem. Roadside service had us out in 2.5 hours. We took the opportunity to look around the tiny town of Ludlow CA, cook a little hamburger helper, and play some games.

Unfortunately, the setback kept us from getting to the Grand Canyon but we did spend the night in Seligman AZ, about 2 hours away. I'm so glad that we did because this little town was so fun. Just like a scene straight out of the movie 'Cars'.
