We're Hiring Again, which means more Resumes!

There are many things I like about being a Supervisor. But really I prefer not to be a supervisor - too many 'HR' related things involved that are a big bummer.  I'd rather be everyone's coworker so we can all just work together.

But what I really don't like about being a Supervisor is hiring & training a new employee. I try to be positive about the experience, so I look forward to reviewing Resumes. (see original Now Hiring post).  I always get a good laugh.

One word, people:  Proofread!!

Here's a few little treasures I found in this round of Resume review:

Do you see this picture?  I actually received this picture as a .jpg attachment. I did crop the name out, but everything else is in original format. It's cut off on the sides, bottom, etc.  It's dark.  It has been crossed-through & written on. It's just not appropriate!!

• ‘I possess an encyclopedic memory’

• ‘Objective: obtain a respective career….’

• ‘I could improve your website 100% in 24 hours’ (really? We just spent $7,500 & 3 months with a professional company redesigning our website. I seriously doubt you can fulfill this promise).

• ‘Mission Statement: To Ensure and Maintain Excellence for my Achievements while Inspiring Excellence in Others.’

• ‘Duties inclusive but not limited to all areas pertaining to mangerial work.’

• ‘GPA: 3.0 Degree: credit completation’  (wth is completation??)

• ‘Objective- I want to find an exploring career to retire from….’

Fortunately, I have received some referrals for the position so I don't have to rely upon these Craiglist resumes.   If you are looking for a job, please PLEASE have someone Proofread your resume.

New School Year

Good News! I just ordered a new computer so maybe I'll be able to start blogging about our family adventures again soon.  For about the last 9 months, I've had pictures on my phone but I because our computer is so awful, it's a nightmare trying to transfer them and make a blog post. It literally takes hours.

So I've got some catching up to do.  But my first priority with the new computer will be to start working on a new photo book. So far I have only completed 1.  I have 6 years to catch up on. Yikes!

Here is a picture of Addison (13) and Preston (10) on their first day of school.  They are both in their last year at each school, so they are both the 'big man on campus'.  It should be a great year!

Here's to a great fall ahead of us!

Our last weekend as 4

Our new arrival will be here on Tuesday so we tried to pack in some fun activities this weekend.

We started the weekend off by taking the kids to one of our favorite breakfast joints, Oddfellows in the Bishop Arts District.  Now that we have moved to Midlothian, we are a little closer to the Dallas scene so this area is a little closer to us now. It's a super cute area with lots of shops and dining.  Unfortunately, since we always go for breakfast most of those shops aren't open.  Eventually we'll get back there in the evening.

Ouur next stop was to the Perot Museum of Nature & Science. This museum opened earlier this year in Dallas and we've been putting off our visit to allow the crowds to die down.  The kids had a great time, both interested in different sections and interactive displays. The museum has 4.5 floors to peruse.  We definitely will have to go back to spend more time; 3 hours didn't allow time to see it all.
Eric & Preston working on a robot.

Addison, making a song.
Saturday evening we met up with our good friends to see a concert at Levitt Pavillion. Unfortunately, after grabbing dinner we only made it to hear 2 songs at the show.  But we had a great time nonetheless.
Reagan, Addison, & Jackson at the Twisted Root

And as for today, we are doing a few things around the house. I worked in my last walk today to meet my 100 mile goal before Austin arrives.  Addison is going to the Apple store to get her phone fixed & studying for her final exams before she flies to Indiana on Wednesday for an International Problem Solvers competition.  She's really excited to participate in this event....and fly on a trip with her schoool friends. And Preston has talked his dad into buying a slip-n-slide for the back yard since our Pool install has been delayed.  I think those slides are so painful - throwing your body to the ground over & over - but I sure did like them as a kid. And I'm sure Preston will too.

The kids have their last week at school coming up.  We'll be cleaning & packing for the hospital tomorrow. And Austin arrives Tuesday.  Super fun weekend followed by a super exciting week!

100 Miles

I set a New Year's Resolution in January to walk 100 miles before the end of my pregnancy and today I finished my last walk with just 1 day to spare.

Here's how it went:
January  19.81 miles
February  22.99 miles
March  24.19 miles
April  17.04 miles
May  16.38
Total  100.41 miles

I know that maintaining a regular exercise schedule has helped me to feel better in general. It definitely made a big diffrence by helping to reduce the swelling in my feet after sitting at work all day.

My next goal is to take off the baby weight by the end of the year by running another 100 miles.  I hope to be jogging again by September 1 and back to doing some 5k's with my family this fall.

New Blog!

I started writing a new blog when I discovered that I was pregnant. My goal in doing so was to keep a timeline for myself of the pregnancy so I could remember the journey. Doing it online was the easiest format; I just can't commit to a journal anymore.

So now that we are expecting our new arrival in 7 days, I have made the blog public for everyone else to see. I will continue to post updates on our new arrival so that I can eventually publish a book.  And after some time, I will get back to posting on this blog alone.

Happy Birthday to Benny, 2008

I found this video in my Drafts, so I'm not sure if it ever made it to the blog or if it ever made it to Benny.  This was in June 2008, for Benny's 4th birthday.

Easter 2008, Revisited

I was just going through my blog and discovered I have several posts that are still in Draft mode, which means they never made it to the blog.

This is a video from Easter 2008. Addison (9 yrs) and Preston (5 yrs)

The light is not so great on this shot.

A Not-So-Lazy Sunday

Every now and then (and I mean very rarely) I have a day with no plans.  And somehow I'm always able to fill up the day. This was the case yesterday. Coincidentally, I read a funny article about this yesterday that suggested people who fill their time up because they feel the need to be busy may suffer with Control issues.

Eric & I started the day together with a fabulous brunch at Blue Mesa.  I have always heard the raves but never experienced it for myself. We'll be going back for sure. That was the last thing we did together for about 8 hours. He worked on his computer all day. Bo-ring.

So I prepared for a trip to the store.  Do you remember when you used to need to go to the store so you jotted down a few things to fill up the fridge/pantry & were all set to shop?  This isn't the case for me these days. It seems to take me alot of prep time to actually make it to the store.  (something I need to work on).
1. Turn on phone and check schedule for the following 7 days.  Coordinate with hubby as to who will be home to eat, for how many days.

2. Use a technology device to schedule a meal plan.  This can take 15-30 minutes. Often times one of us will be home alone throughout the week so I try to have something on hand that is either (1) leftovers or (2) quick, easy, and a small portion for 1.  Devising the meal plan can include meals from the following resources: my personal List of favorite entrees/sides, the 'Favorites' recipes I have bookmarked, or from Pinterest.  Occasionally I will open an actual cookbook.  But recipes from a cookbook often require prep time.  I can only make a meal that requires prep time (ie: Lasagna) if I can make it on Sunday.  Since Eric & I usually get home from work during the week between 6-7pm, there's not much prep time to be had if we want to cook, eat, and clean up before 9pm.

I should stop here & disclose that I am not the only one that cooks in our house; this post makes me sound like some sort of kitchen queen, which I am not. But I am a planner (see Control issues above).  Eric is a much better cook than I am. I often rely upon him to handle all grilling and he usually takes a peek if I am cooking some sort of meat. I love grilled food....so his cooking season is quickly approaching!

3. Using the meal plan, take inventory of items needed from the grocery store. And then run through the house to check on cleaning supplies, toiletries, etc.

4. Compile coupons. This is often too time consuming, if I even make the effort to look for coupons.  Since I had plenty of time yesterday, I clipped everything we regularly consume from the Sunday paper. I really try not to add things to my grocery list because I have a coupon; that defeats the purpose. And I never clip a coupon just to try something new. However, if something is a super deal and I know that we will use it I have trouble just letting the coupon go to waste.

I added this stack to my existing coupon supply, and then matched up the coupons I have with the Grocery List.  And then I opened up the iphone app for Tom Thumb, and spent even more time running through the 100+ coupons they have specifically for their store. This REALLY hacks me off that grocery stores make special customer pricing.  I mean, I work in the business world, so I understand the logic behind these loyalty programs and their data collection process. But it's just frustrating that as a consumer I can't walk in the store and they already have everything priced accordingly.

5. After about an hour of planning & coordinating, I can finally grab my recycle bags and head to the store.

I don't claim to be very savvy in the kitchen, but as the wedded years go by my Susie Homemaker skills are improving. I am much better today than I have been over the last 7 years. I can only imagine what my adult-aged children and grandchildren will be saying 10 years from now:  Let's go to their house for dinner. I love her ________ dish.  Someday....

Back to my day of nothing.  When I returned from the store, I had 4 things to cook which all came from Pinterest.  3 of them were new recipes.

I started with Italian Chicken in the crockpot.  It's not the healthiest dish, but pair it with a green vegetable and my family will all clean their plates.  I think it has 4 ingredients: chicken, italian dressing mix, cream of chicken soup (I use 1 can), and (light) cream cheese. Mix in or pour over pasta, and wa-la.  We had this with broccoli, which could be mixed in the pasta, but you know how kids get when you mix things. Ahhh!! And I also confused the Italian dressing mix with the Ranch dressing mix, so we actually had Ranch Chicken instead of Italian Chicken. No one knew or seemed to care.

Italian Ranch Chicken Pasta

Once the chicken was in the crockpot, I started working on my weekly breakfast dish.  I've been trying to prepare a protein-rich breakfast for the last few weeks so I can be sure to keep my blood-sugar levels in check and not have any dizzy episodes that have happened as a side effect of my pregnancy.  Addison also had some health issues a few weeks ago and we determined that she is not starting her day with the nutrition she needs.  Breakfast is always a challenge with Preston because he doesn't like breakfast to begin with, but he also doesn't like eggs.  Anywho, this Sunday I decided to try Egg Cups, a new recipe for me from Pinterest.  These were also super easy. I cooked some sausage in a skillet. Then in a 12 cup muffin tin, I added a little sausage, some shredded cheese, a little bit of green onion, and then filled 3/4 with beaten eggs. This recipe has endless opportunities. You can add all kinds of ingredients and use egg whites to make it healthier.  While I think the cups I made are delicious, they are a little bland. I will be using some pepper when reheating throughout the week.

Egg Cups with Egg, Sausage, Cheese, Green Onion

Next up on the list was a Snack.  I found this recipe on Pinterest for Dried Strawberries. The description included words like 'gummy' and 'twizzler'.  So I was thinking they would be a good gummy snack for the week. Two ingredients: sliced strawberries with Salt and Pepper to taste.  I obviously did some thing(s) wrong with this recipe, because it turned out to be a 'Pinterest Fail' (a new term for Pinterest projects gone bad).

Failed Dried Strawberries

At this point in the day, I took a break on the couch.  And then Lucky and I worked in a 2 mile walk. We returned home with about an hour left until dinner, so he jumped in the bathtub.  Have I ever mentioned how great my dog is?

A quick drink before soaping up.

And 1 final project before dinner: Frozen Yogurt Covered Fruit.  I picked this recipe because we are trying to be healthier at our house (minus the Pasta dish).  With my pregnancy, I have had no problem refusing desserts.  And I make them more often too so my hubby is often forced to indulge with me. But we need to stop this and get back on our normal track. So this is a dessert-alternative.

This recipe calls for a chunk of fruit (I used bananas and strawberries), greek yogurt, and toppings. I wanted to try this recipe on my own first before getting the kids to help me. I hate greek yogurt but I realize it is so much better than regular yogurt. The yogurt I used for this recipe has 18 grams of protein per serving - that's huge compared to the flavored Yoplait I eat everyday.  But I just can't stand the taste of the Greek stuff and I know that my kids will not like it either.  However, this recipe calls for honey to be mixed into the yogurt, which cuts out alot of sour grossness. If I make them again, I will actually add more honey to mask the Greek grossness.  But if you like Greek yogurt, you will like this little treat.  I wish I had some nuts to use as a topping, but all I had on hand was cookie sprinkles.  So the verdict: 1 thumb up.

At this point in the day, Eric turned off the computer, we had dinner, got 4 loads of laundry put away, and tasted the yogurt pops.  9pm had rolled around and my day of nothing had officially worn me out.

On the agenda for this week:  Slow cooker salsa chicken, taxes, and another track meet. And I almost forgot it's a 4 day work week!

Track Season

Addison is competing in track this year for the first time. I'm glad that she's joined the team because it's exposed her to some new skills she never knew she had.  So far she has competed in the Long Jump, 4x100 Sprint Relay, 100m Dash, and the Hurdles.  She's done really well with all of them!

Here's a little clip of her running a 300 meter hurdle race at the first practice meet of the year. (She's on the right side of the track in the Pink shirt).  At last night's meet, she beat the Frank Seale 7th grade girls' record for 300m hurdles by 2 seconds. Her 4x100 relay team also broke the school record last night.

And here's a little video I captured of her long jump last night.  She broke the Frank Seale 7th grade girls' record at a track meet: 15'. Three broken records in 1 meet;  I wonder if they'll give her a star on the sidewalk or something?

Unfortunately, Preston's baseball opening ceremonies were cancelled this weekend due to rain. I was hoping to have some striking photos in his new uniform prior to the season, but that will be delayed now by another 2 weeks due to Easter.

Ryan Bingham Concert

Eric and I took a quick trip down to Gruene TX last week to see our favorite singer, Ryan Bingham, in concert at Gruene Hall.  We were only in town for about 24 hours, but it was a great trip and an awesome show!  I can't wait to get back to Gruene.  Hopefully next time we can take the kids and work in a rafting/tubing trip on the river.

We bought one of these autographed posters that were made for the Gruene Hall show.  It will look great in our next home.  Did I mention that our house is For Sale, officially?? Yea!!

Jody visits for the Winter

It was such a treat to have Jody visit America for her 2nd time this winter. The last time she was here, Addison & Preston didn't have the chance to meet her.

New Year, New Goal

The holidays were fun, but I must say I feel like I am on the Jessica-Simpson-Pregnancy-Eating track with all of the things I ate over the last month.  People ask me all of the time if I am having cravings, which I haven't.  But I have allowed myself to eat many things that I would not normally. Lots of sweets, breads, french fries, cheese burgers, smoothies.

So now that the holidays are over, I need to refocus on my health and the health of Wee Walker (as Eric calls the baby). I've come up with a new fitness goal for myself.  Since I have been banned from jogging, my new goal is to walk 100 miles before I deliver.  I think this is doable - 20 miles a month, 4 miles a week, approximately 2 sessions a week.  I hope to actually work in 3-4 sessions a week, but don't want to be unrealistic about how I may feel during the last trimester.

It's the smallest fitness goal I've ever made and really pales in comparison to my sister. But that's okay. I've always relied on goals to keep myself focused.

Good luck with your fitness goals or whatever your resolutions may be!

We've had a busy fall around our house.  Addison played Volleyball & Basketball for her school. She's also involved with Choir.  And Preston's joined his school choir too.  So there's been ALOT of miles to Midlothian this fall between games, tournaments, and several choir concerts.  Spending all of this time traveling back and forth, and getting home late at night is helping us to narrow down our options for moving.  Right now we're looking at the Cedar Hill and Midlothian area.

Addison is doing GREAT in her first season of basketball. I'm really impressed with how aggressive she is and she really has a head for the game. You can watch the game and know that she knows what is going on, where to go, and what to do. I could elaborate on the things that her team will get better at, but I'm not going to be that parent. I HATED coming off of the court after a game only to hear what every parent thought I should do better. So I'll leave that to the coach. I hope that Preston will consider playing basketball next winter. He seems to have a knack for it as well.

And we'll keep working on free throws =0)

Eric's revisited his love for hunting this fall. I think he's put it on the backburner for a few years with other priorities.  He's been on 2 hunting trips.  1 for Goose Hunting and 1 for Bird Hunting.  He's also been working on nurturing the Deer environment around our place in Glen Rose.

Goose Hunting trip in North Texas

Eric Walker & Chris Huski, Bird Hunting at Rough Creek Lodge
And of course, we've been consumed the last 14 weeks with the news of our new Baby, arriving in June 2013.  We've spent the last few weeks putting together an announcement and sharing our news with family & friends.  The first trimester has been a little nerve-racking for me, but we've made it through the scary period unscathed.  Our last checkup at 12 weeks showed a healthy baby and we got normal genetic test results.  Praise the Lord!  I've been feeling great with no morning sickness at all. PTL!  I do get a little worn out at night around 8-9pm, get some back pain every now and then, and find that I get full from a meal faster & then I become miserable.  So I'm trying to make an effort to have reasonable meals and a few snacks. (Which should be normal anyway!)

NOLA

Eric & I jetted off to New Orleans for a quick trip with a few friends.  It was pretty rainy but managed to have a great time no matter! We spent most of the first day checking out the Market and the French Quarter .

Kickoff Breakfast!  Fresh off of the plane at 8AM.  (Patrick, Walter, Eric, Margaret, Amy)

Eric spent a good hour or 2 standing under cover, doing some people-watching in the rain.

Summer's coming to an End

Summer always seems like it has come to a close when the kids spend their last week at our house.  That means that school is about to start and back to the regular schedule. Not as much fun, laughing, movie watching, cooking, cleaning, trips to the Ballpark, stories about camp, chaos.  Boring.

But we had a super fun week!

We started the week with a big family trip to Camp El Tesoro for Ezra's 5th birthday. It was so much fun to spend time with all of my siblings together. I don't know when the last time was that the 5 of us were together.

I can't say much for sleeping on camp bunks, but the swimming, playing, and star gazing was great.

What do you think Uncle Eric is telling these boys?

Preston & Annie.
Our next adventure was a trip to the Wringling Brothers, Barnum, & Bailey Circus.  Addison & Preston have never been.  It was a great show but this made me realize how grown-up my kids are.  There were so many little ones at the circus in complete awe of the performance.  It was quite impressive.

I was surprised to see the protesters when we arrived. I hope this isn't true.

Preston caught me trying to take his picture.  He was totally nervous
about the circus guy falling off of the high wire!

And we wrapped up the week with a quick trip to San Antonio.  Inspired by Addison's extra credit project, we made a trip to The Alamo, spent a few hours walking on the Riverwalk, and then hung out at the hotel pool.  And we stopped at the Natural Bridge Caverns on our way home. (These were the coolest underground caves we've been to yet!)

Both Addion & Preston will have Texas History this year for their Social Studies curriculum. It was suggested that we watch the Imax film 'The Alamo' across the street from the Alamo before making taking the tour. I'm so glad that we did this!  The Alamo, an incredible piece of our history, was totally crowded and not very kid-friendly. Nonetheless, I'm glad we made the visit and we can mark it off the list!

Too bad all of my Alamo pictures are on the big camera.

Addison & Eric lounging by the pool.

And one final video of our little fish, Preston.  He had a BLAST spending 7 hours at the pool.

So what is there to do on a Houseboat?

Having 12 people makes loading & loading much quicker!
Everyone asks what did you do on the Houseboat? We did quite a bit.  Lake Ouachita is such a beautiful lake. No homes are located on the shoreline and the water is very clean/clear.  Each day we got up, had a great breakfast, did some swimming, boating, or fishing. We found a new cove each afternoon & spent the evening exploring the new territory.  Each night we relaxed on the top deck while the kids had run of the lower deck, playing board games, hide & seek, or watching movies.
